Child and Adolescent Mental Health Care Spell

A Child and Adolescent Mental Health Care Spell is a Care Spell.

A Child and Adolescent Mental Health Care Spell is a continuous period of assessment or care for a child or adolescent PATIENT provided by a Health Care Provider's specialist Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services. The specialist mental health services are delivered by Child and Adolescent Mental Health CARE PROFESSIONALS, some of whom may receive referrals directly. Examples of Child and Adolescent Mental Health CARE PROFESSIONALS would include:

There may be more than one Mental Health Responsible Clinician assigned during the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Care Spell. Care for the PATIENT's mental health may be provided by more than one Responsible Child and Adolescent Mental Health Care Team.

A Child and Adolescent Mental Health Care Spell is initiated by a REFERRAL REQUEST, or the temporary or permanent transfer of main responsibility for provision of Child and Adolescent Mental Health care for the PATIENT from another Health Care Provider.

For REFERRAL REQUESTS, the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Care Spell commences with an initial assessment of the referral, which will determine whether assessment, treatment or care by the Health Care Provider's specialist Child and Adolescent Mental Health services is appropriate. If it is not deemed appropriate, then the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Care Spell will end.

If the REFERRAL REQUEST is accepted, the PATIENT will be offered an assessment and/or treatment.  However, if it is decided at the assessment, by the PATIENT/carer or CARE PROFESSIONAL, that further care is not required, then the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Care Spell will end and the PATIENT will be discharged from the service.  Otherwise, the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Care Spell continues until treatment is complete and all associated Child and Adolescent Mental Health Clinical Intervention Episodes are explicitly closed.  However the PATIENT may also be discharged from the service for other reasons (see DISCHARGE FROM MENTAL HEALTH SERVICE REASON).

The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Care Spell addresses the mental health care of the PATIENT and as such may comprise a series of episodes, attendances, contacts or stays each of which will be recorded, for example Consultant Out-Patient Episodes, Consultant Episodes (Hospital Provider), Child and Adolescent Mental Health Clinical Intervention Episodes, out-patient APPOINTMENTS and Face To Face Contacts Community Care etc. These are recorded in addition to Care Programme Approach Episodes. A PATIENT may be subject to more than one instance of Mental Health Care Without Patient Consent.

If treatment or care is required then this is sometimes provided as part of the Care Programme Approach. Treatment or care provided as part of the Care Programme Approach will involve one or more Care Programme Approach Episodes each with one or more Care Programme Approach Reviews. The date a PATIENT was informed of the outcome of a Care Programme Approach Review should be recorded. The requirement for the PATIENT to be informed of the Care Programme Approach Review outcome is as defined in The Patient's Charter - Mental Health Services.

Treatment requiring the temporary transfer of the PATIENT to another Health Care Provider with the main responsibility for provision of Child and Adolescent Mental Health care also being transferred, will initiate a Mental Health Care Spell Suspension, and end the current Care Programme Approach Episode if applicable.  In cases of temporary transfer to another Health Care Provider for physical care without the main responsibility for Child and Adolescent Mental Health care being transferred, both the current Child and Adolescent Mental Health Care Spell, and the current Care Programme Approach Episode if applicable, will continue and the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Care Spell will not be suspended.

Treatment requiring the permanent transfer of the PATIENT to another Health Care Provider will initiate the ending of the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Care Spell, and any associated Care Programme Approach Episode if applicable.
